She’s behind me. I recognized my mistake as soon as I shifted, but it’s too late to take anything back now. I’d promised her we’d work together. I’d promised not to let my instincts to protect her take over and shut her out.
But I did it anyway. Something kicks in inside me, a primal fear, and my first action is always to protect her, even though I know it’s wrong.
I just pray to the Goddess that she forgives me.
‘Status,’ I ask Turgan in the mind-link, opening up the communication so Lyra can also hear. It’s a small concession to make up for my mistake.
‘Three of them, strong warriors,’ he reports. ‘And I sense two more coming. They won’t give us the chance to shift back so we can explain ourselves.’
