My heart freezes when I catch sight of the monsters these men have become. I’ve never seen anything so horrifying in my life. But Cassian only hesitates for a moment before running straight for them.

It’s the only word that comes to me through my shock and fear.

‘I’ll hold them off,’ he assures me. ‘Just use the amulet.’

I don’t know how he can be so calm. ‘They’ll kill you!’

‘Not if I have anything to say about it,’ he answers, diving into the nearest one, which has already thrown three of our warriors clear. Their crimson blood stains the white snow that had already been cleared when I cast off the first set of black wolves.
