Only a few days after the battle between Beatrix Grinmoor and me, my roommates and I received letters—golden envelopes made of thick paper, slathered in glitter. Each one bore our names in elegant script, as if to emphasise the exclusivity of whatever event we were being invited to. Calliope mentioned that Lord Rowan himself had sent mine.

At first, I was happy. My plan had worked—I’d caught his attention with the battle, and now he would be keeping a closer eye on me than before. But the smile on my face slowly faltered as a thought crept in. What if he had heard everything I told Beatrix and was now planning the perfect way to punish me? What if he intended to kill me during this… ball?

“It’s a ball,” Anemone said, a smile lighting her face as she stared down at the golden card in her hands. “We’re being invited to a ball.”
