"If they are such good people, why are you running away?" I know I sound like a suspicious asshole. I couldn't bring myself to feel bad about it.
She may have helped me when I needed it, and I'm extremely grateful to her for that, but she also lied along with them. And up till now, she hasn't done anything to show she was forced to do that. It was her choice.
"Is the story about your parents even true?" it sounded like just that, a story to match what they wanted.
"Yes, it is. I promise." The way her eyes widened, full of sincerity made me want to believe her.
A part of me did, but there was that other part that still had doubts.
"I ended up here after a shipwreck when I was three. There wasn't much to be found when they saw me on the shore." She swallowed thickly, her voice breaking a little. "They have no idea what happened to my parents. They looked for days, thinking maybe they'll see the boat that sank with us but they found nothing."
