My heart skipped a beat at her words. Prove my innocence? Was this a joke? This made me feel a way, and I won’t lie, I was a bit annoyed. My mind struggled to process the possibility. Was she really serious? 

Like, could she actually do that? I lifted my head to meet her gaze, and my breath caught in my throat. “Prove my innocence?” I asked, my voice barely above a wiper. “How?” I tried to humor her. 

May hesitated for a moment, biting her lip as if considering how much to say. “I know that everyone doesn’t believe you, Rue, but I do. You’re a good person and you would never kill a person. Elder Robert framed you and he should not get away with it.” 

I chuckled without humor. “Um…thanks?” 

“I want to help you.” 

“But how?” I pronounced each word distinctly. Look, I was not really annoyed or mad at her, I was just taking it out on her. But my real issue was the fact that I had expected to see Darco, not her.
