I knew Carla wanted me to tell Lena that I didn't love her so she could feel more at ease. I knew I owed Carla the respect to do so. I hurt her, and I had to rectify my mistakes. But I wasn't sure if I could tell Lena that I didn't love her again. I had done it once, and it almost tore my heart apart. I didn't want to hurt Lena with my words. Lena didn't need rejection when she felt most alone. She needed my support and affection. It would be a low blow to say the same thing again.
I remained silent because I didn't know what to say to Carla. I could explain my reasons, but Carla wouldn't understand. It surprised me that Carla didn't kick Lena out of the house. Despite what happened, she thought about Lena and the babies. But Carla drew a thin line. If I didn't comply with Carla's request, I knew she would leave me.
