Chapter 119
Harper’s POV
I feel sick with anxiety. He told me he was working. I know he did. Why else would I have to call him when I was in the car? Why would that even matter unless he wasn’t home?
But he’s here. Sitting across from me. Watching me like he’s trying to catch me out in a lie I haven’t even told yet. I can feel my phone burning a hole in my pocket. I grabbed it the moment he put it down.
“You’re being distant,” he says, his voice calm, but sharp around the edges.
I look up slowly. “What?”
“I said, you’re being distant. Like you don’t want to come near me.”
My heart hammers so hard I can feel it in my throat. I shake my head quickly, keeping my expression soft, apologetic. I need to act normal until he leaves. Until I can get out.
