“Calm down, Valerie. Please, just breathe and talk to me.” I said, my heart beating rapidly. “Who didn’t make it? What are you talking about?”

Her sobs grew only louder, raw and broken.

I just finished with a business meeting and was about to head back to the hotel when I received a call from Valerie. When I answered, she was already crying.

Her tears cut me like a blade even if I had no idea why she was crying. At first, I thought it was just her pregnancy hormones messing with her emotions, so I waited for her to cry for a while before explaining what was going on.

But as she finally spoke, I realized it wasn’t her hormones, something bad had happened. However, she didn’t say the exact thing that happened.

She just kept on repeating that he didn’t make it.

Who was she talking about?

“Valerie,” I whispered, tightening my grip around the steering wheel. “Who didn’t make it? You’re scaring me, please, talk to me.”
