Chapter 47. An Unexpected Invite

Evelyn’s POV

I had to leave. There was no reason for me to stay any longer. What was I waiting for? To see him take another woman into his arms? To see him kiss her or, worse, make love to her right in front of me?

I didn’t need to see any more—I’d already seen enough.

What baffled me most, though, was Caleb’s words echoing in my mind. “He still loves you, Evelyn. He never stopped loving you.”

Those words, the ones that made me smile like a fool, now felt like a cruel joke.

Was Caleb lying? Did he just pity me? Did he say those things to make me feel better, to give me the closure I so desperately craved?

I laughed out bitterly. If it was pity, then it was even more painful. Because for a moment, I believed him. I believed that Nathan still cared.

But how could he? How could someone who claimed to love me stand there, surrounded by other women, letting them touch him so intimately, so freely?
