Sitting directly across from Nathan, with my father at the head of the table, was the kind of discomfort I couldn’t put into words.

It wasn’t just awkward—it was unbearable. I was sure Nathan had no idea what this dinner was really about, and neither did I.

I had no idea if Nathan knew, but I believed he also had no idea about the dinner too because I knew he wouldn’t come.
