Claire’s POV

Good thing I hadn’t crossed paths with Cole yet. I wasn’t ready to face him. I might have said something inappropriate, or I might have guilt-tripped him. I didn’t know how to express my disappointment in him—and in myself—for trusting him that much.

“People like Cole are really dangerous. They’re quiet, and that’s why you don’t know when they will attack you behind your back,” Luke said while I was lost in my thoughts.

“You’re truly right, Luke,” I said.

“Don’t worry about your dad. We’re going to do everything to bring the company back to your family. I’m not going to be your enemy here, Claire. Just trust me,” he said with a smile.
