A wave of relief washed over me as I saw that Karl hadn’t crashed into the wall. He wasn’t dead. I didn’t kill him by slamming him against the rock wall.
Jacob came over to congratulate us. He extended his hand to Karl to help him up.
“You did it,” he said, with a hint of a triumphant smile.
Karl practically jumped up to hug him. He was happy, with a growing euphoria. I looked at him with some suspicion. Not because I was jealous or envious of his powers, but because I knew he was in love with Dove and I found it cynical of him.
I took a few steps back to let them celebrate. Jacob seemed to be in a good mood. He was even laughing and that wasn’t usual. Karl was showing and explaining his powers to him like an excited child with something.
The pain in my head was sharp. I didn’t pay attention to it. Surely it was a sequel to having been so focused on focusing.
