Carmen sobbed as she finished her story, and I hugged her; I wanted her to feel comfort in her sadness. She had been judged by the people around her, and that was why that man went after her, seeking her death. I understood why he would have wanted to kill her; the news about Josefina’s imprisonment shouldn’t have spread yet.
“What will happen to my sister?” she finally asked; I knew that moment would come as soon as I entered that room.
To be honest with her, I didn’t know what to do with her either; I was still angry, and I couldn’t understand why my jealousy wouldn’t fade. I was human; I had those defects that I couldn’t overcome. Part of my insecurity wouldn’t burn away.
“I will free her tonight, I promise,” I said with certainty in my voice. It was time to make decisions; I was an adult now, and I had to overcome my insecurities. “We’ll go together; I’ll come to pick you up once I announce it in court because she is my prisoner.”
