Chapter 24. The Shelter

Giovanna got up and walked to the nearest church, carrying the sleeping Caio and almost unable to bear his weight, she went inside. Caio's weight had never bothered her before. But she felt that her strength was running out. She felt them being sucked out of her body.

The pastor of the church was closing up, and he stared at her with a frown when he saw her sit down in one of the chairs. He walked over to her.

"Is there a problem, young lady?"

"I need you to take this child to an orphanage. I don't have the money to take him anywhere."

"Are you going to abandon your son?"

"He's not my son. I found him on the bench in the square."

He stared at the sleeping child. And reaching out his arms, Caio passed into his arms, not knowing what was happening. Giovanna stood up. She couldn't shed tears in front of him or he'd get suspicious.
