He didn’t want to move directly to Salem just in case whoever was assigned to the case was smart enough to track them down. He wanted everything to look like a kidnap, just in case they were caught. Then, from Michigan, they would hear the news in the papers, and they would know what to do; they would have an idea of how the police were thinking based on the reports that would be given. They would decide on the best course of action.
According to Juice, all the equipment needed for digging was already at the site, but Sky’s equipment, which the man said he needed to be able to detect any metal on the soil, was yet to be delivered.
Smith was not very meticulous, but he knew to be thorough with a plan. He knew that if he made any wrong move, then the plan would be destroyed. From Salem, he would use TV and newspapers to monitor how far the mission had gone and how much time they had left before they were written off as dead.
