Smith knew it would be chalked up as one part of the case. As a matter of fact, he was counting on Kurt’s carelessness to simply assign some officer to the case and then make sure work at the office continued.
He had seen the way that the new superior dealt with Martin’s death. He had seen the carelessness and near insensitivity the man expressed by telling Smith to hurry up Marlow’s case and for everyone else to get to work ASAP.
Although that was actually the right thing to do, Smith knew the man was a little cold-hearted to have dismissed such a case in a hurry. Yes, they were the cops, and yes, their lives were filled with seeing dead bodies almost every single day. But then the difference between a dead body and another was the memories you had with one of them. He believed Martin had been far too useful, too important to the department to simply be buried, and his case ended just like that.
