His voice was a chilling temperature that Fiona remembered very clearly.
“It’s not,” her mother defended. McCarthy held her gaze for a few seconds and then nodded.
“Good,” he said and left the room.
Her mother looked around frantically and found what she was looking for: a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. She lit one and took a drag while Fiona hugged herself and waited for an opportunity to get the hell out.
Fiona knew it would take a while for her to get over being a fly on the wall. Her parents discussed how much worried they were about the fact that their daughter was nowhere to be seen and how badly that would affect their lives of comfort.
Amanda had been great with comforting her and with giving out information when she asked about who was sending her parents blackmail notes—if that was what the mysterious letter was.
She knew exactly who had sent the letter because she had ordered that person to send it.
