Chapter 68. Doctor’s Appointment
The next time Carlos had a routine check-up with his personal doctor, he was told to get some rest and relax.
“I can’t afford rest,” he’d argued. “I have to keep an eye on McCarthy. You may have been told, but I’ve stepped on his toes a few times.”
“Well,” the doctor shrugged, “sorry to say, but you can’t afford not to rest either.”
Carlos tutted, thinking to himself that he shouldn’t have mentioned the recent surge of nightmares to the man. They had come suddenly, often hard to follow and understand. They featured his mother a few times and the girl from Vegas once or twice.
He’d seen Jasmine too, and Zama, and many other people he could hardly recognize. They usually did very strange things in his dreams—things that didn’t make sense but disturbed him nonetheless, even though he sometimes couldn’t remember what the dreams were about the second he woke up.
