Chapter 79. His Hostage

Carlos went straight to work after visiting his hostage. He would call her his hostage; it was a much better name—a name that was more fitting with her personality as the child of Clyde McCarthy, his enemy, his mother’s murderer.

No matter how he tried, he found it difficult to match her with what she had done. Her big doe eyes were full of honest energy. When he looked at her, he saw what Dahlia must have seen when he’d first shown up at the consortium’s doorstep. She used to tell him that his righteous eyes would deceive so many of their enemies and lead them to their doom.

Even that morning, when he’d seen her with the full knowledge that she was the offspring of the hell-bound piece of shit that was McCarthy, when he had fully expected to lose his anger so thoroughly, he’d need his last bit of common sense to keep him from strangling her. He had looked at her and felt nothing but fondness and battled with himself to keep from smiling on instinct.
