“Can you find a lesser way to avoid being a jerk?” Ryan, my designated driver for today, and the brother I wish I had said immediately I got into the car.
“What will you have had me do?” I inquired, not because whatever he said was going to solve anything, but because I needed to keep him talking to keep me talking so my mind wouldn’t wander to insanity.
“Maybe not do the wedding if you were going to ditch the bride at the altar?” he responded, “Jesse might be some bitch who deserves it, but it is still cruel.”
He was correct and that was the problem. I did not wish to ditch her at the altar. In fact, we would have actually gone ahead with the wedding plans and filed for a divorce after two years according to the prenup agreement. I was going to do this whole wedding like Father wanted. Be the cowardly son and the devoted heir just to keep this company which was not at all sinking—yet, afloat.
