Chapter 37. The News

Calla packed the sandwiches, strawberries and blueberries, and yogurt. She boxed everything up carefully, making sure the yogurt lid was tight before slipping everything into a brown paper bag.

It was early, the sun barely out yet, and the streets were still quiet. The cool morning air brushed against her face as she stepped outside. She let out a small sigh, she hadn’t slept much last night. Her head still felt heavy from thinking too much, mostly about Rico and the things he said.

She was on her way to the hospital where she’d had Eli moved. She’d gone to see him after Bruno dropped her off yesterday and couldn’t stop worrying. He didn’t seem to be getting better at the school hospital. The new place wasn’t fancy, but it was clean, quiet, and good enough for her peace of mind.
