I don’t know what shocked me more—the fact that the nurse at the front desk already knew Sebastian or the ease with which she gave out my mother’s room number, like he belonged here more than I did.
I turned to look at him, suspicion rising again. But he was already thanking the nurse, like this was just another polite errand, like he hadn’t just completely hijacked a part of my life I hadn’t even let Izzy or anyone into.
Room 312.
I moved forward stiffly, my arms crossed tightly against my chest. I could feel Sebastian’s presence behind me, calm and sure-footed, but he didn’t say a word. Didn’t try to touch me again, either. Smart move.
When we reached the room, I hesitated, hand on the doorknob. I glanced at him, just once, before I pushed it open. It was the kind of look you give someone you’re hoping would reconsider their decision at the last minute. He didn’t look confused. He knows exactly what he was doing.
