Chapter 28
Avery’s POV
As any twenty-six-year-old would do when faced with an impossible life decision, I hold up my phone to my face and dial my mother. She picks up on the third ring with a bright, “And she finally remembers her ma.”
My eyelids fall closed at the sound of her warm, comforting voice, and the hand on my forehead rises up higher to get tangled inside my thick tresses as I heave a sigh,
“Hi, ma. For the record, we spoke just last week and planned Thanksgiving.”
She laughs in her usual tinkling way, “Oh, did we? Even though I remember quite literally begging you to make the festivity and not jet off with your very rich boyfriend…”
“I’m calling because I’m in a bad place concerning him,” I close my eyes and picture Gaius’ face, his well-defined angular features combined with his resting, sultry expression, “He’s supposed to be behind bars, and I’m using my power of double-sided information wrongly.”
