I don’t know how long I slept after Danica left my room, but Ronan wasn’t back, and the girls shook.
When I came down for breakfast, they were all somber and sad, and it broke my heart to see them like that.
I didn’t have anything to say to them, so I just kept quiet. Danica must have broken the news to them.
Heather walked up to me as soon as she saw me. “Is it true? Jade is dead?” she asked.
I nodded. She did something that surprised me entirely. She hugged me.
“I am so sorry you had to see that,” she said.
I accepted her hug. I don’t know what Danica told them, but if it would make them reduce their hostility, then I was okay with it.
“Anybody hungry?” the cook asked, but nobody had any appetite.
I had none for food. I just wanted to be alone in my thoughts.
“Hey, I know we are all mourning, but that is no reason to starve to sea… starve yourselves,” Danica caught her slip.
