I took the phone from her, taking it off the loudspeaker.
“Hello?”
“Hello? Who is this? Where is Edeline? What have you done with her?” the man’s panicked voice came over the phone.
I resisted the urge to snicker, but I didn’t. Now wasn’t the time.
“Oh, relax, she is safe. Sophie has been here with me the whole time,” I assured him.
“Sophie?” he asked, confused.
“Her new name. She had to change it,” I told him.
“Oh,” he whispered.
I heard the pain in his voice, it was not my place to reassure him, but I found myself doing it anyway.
“She is fine.”
“How do I know you are not saying it to make me feel better?” he asked stubbornly.
“Because I don’t know you well enough to go that far. She is not here right now, but I can assure you she is fine,” I repeated.
“That’s a relief. I thought about her all these years. I can’t imagine it’s been easy to deal with the loss alone and be on the run at the same time
