My hands twisted in my lap, knuckles so white.
But I kept my voice steady. “Then why am I here? Shouldn’t you despise the very sight of me? Because of meyour mate, my mother, is gone. Because of me, she died of a broken heart.”
My words came out sharper than intended, more like a challenge than a plea.
I stared out at the city flashing past the tinted windows, determined not to let him see the way my nerves popped and fizzed in my veins.
