Jeremy’s POV
The pain in her eyes was too raw to be fake. But I couldn’t risk being seen with her. So I steeled myself, even though my heart was breaking.
“What’s your name?”
She swallowed, her lips trembling. “Rebecca”
“Okay, Rebecca, you know what’s going to happen now? I’m not dismissing you, I promise. Give me your contact, and we are going to meet later tomorrow. If what you are saying is true, I will get you justice. But you need to promise you won’t tell anyone else for now.”
Her lips quivered. She searched my face, trying to decide if she could trust the son of a man she claimed ruined her life.
“I promise,” she whispered finally. “Just… don’t forget me. Don’t pretend this didn’t happen.”
“I won’t,” I said, and I meant my words.
