I curled myself into a tight ball on my bed, hugging my knees as if they could shield me from everything crashing in my chest. The duel was probably going on already…

The blanket felt suffocating but I didn’t throw it off. I just lay there, staring into the dark, listening to Stacy’s soft giggles drift from her desk. She was watching a movie on her system, the bright glow flickering across her face every time she leaned closer to the screen.

We hadn’t said much since she came in tonight. She’d been wrapped in her own little world, and I… Well, mine was a wreck.

The cake Carol had bought me sat half-open on the table, now a little lopsided from where Stacy had cut into it earlier. She’d wished me a simple happy birthday before settling with her fork and laptop. We didn’t have any real conversation. If I was right, then she had been throwing scanty glances my way every now and then.

Nothing had felt simple today. My birthday was a blur
