Chapter 77. One Can Hope

Kyle’s POV

I sit awkwardly in Elder White’s kitchen. His mate hands me a cup of tea and muffin. She then shuffles out of the kitchen to leave us to speak. I watch her leave and remember all the times I daydreamed about growing old with Eryn. Now it feels more like a nightmare.

“You have made a mess of things,” Elder White tells me.

“Then why didn’t you leave with the rest of them?” I ask.

“I am old,” he replies simply. “I could not survive as a rogue, and neither could my mate. It is better for us to be a part of a dying pack than no pack at all.”

I bristle at his words. He doesn’t want to be here, so I know he won’t be on my side. Regardless, I have to ask him for help.

“You have connections with the Elder Council. Surely, you could help me plead my case. They could force pack members to return, and we can rebuild. They could also demand that Alpha Atticus return my mate,” I am speaking quickly because I am nervous. “There has to be a way
