“You’re mellowing in your old age,” I teased softly, unable to stop the small smile that curved my lips. “I love it.”
My father scoffed, folding his arms over his broad chest, though his eyes were warm—far warmer than they used to be years ago. “I blame your mom,” he groaned, but there was unmistakable amusement in his voice, the kind that only came out when he was relaxed and content.
Ellis stood a few steps away from us, still visibly stunned. For years—years—he had wanted my father’s approval. He never said it out loud, but I saw it in the way he straightened his shoulders whenever Dad entered a room, the way he measured his words carefully, the way his jaw clenched whenever my father was stern with him. And now, finally, he had it.
