Chapter 1

One fateful day, on the 25th of September, I got the scare of my life. My husband brought another woman into our home, and not just any random person, it was my best friend, Rina Hill.

Rina and I did everything together; Laughed, cried, and even had similar dreams, but little did I know that she was nothing but a psychopathic woman who had made up her mind to steal my happiness.

“Baby, you finally brought me to our home?” Rina asked, and Frederick smiled eerily as they walked in my direction.

Frederick did everything he could to ignore my presence, and so did Rina. Although I thought it was an orchestration of my imagination, it turned out not to be. My best friend was the other woman in my husband's life. I would have never imagined and hence, I was disgusted.

“Honey, please go upstairs to the room. I'll join you after a while.” Frederick said to Rina as he gestured for her to go up the stairs.

Rina walked past me, wearing a smile after paying heed to Frederick’s instructions. I had two options in my mind; Either to go upstairs and drag Rina back by the hair or to run out of the house, crying my eyes out.

After a moment of thought, I chose to go up. I decided that If she didn’t explain herself to me understandably and reasonably, I would drag her downstairs with her face scrubbing the floor and I wouldn't care.

I swiftly ran up to my room and met her taking off her earrings. She turned to me and shot a sly smile. “Hey bestie, what a beautiful day, Right?” Rina said in a muffled voice.

She was either trying to upset me more or maybe she wanted to instigate me more than she already did - I didn't understand her motive.

I moved forward, looked her in the eyes, and shouted, “Why did you do this to me? I trusted you! I loved you… like a sister! Why Rina?”

My heart broke into a million pieces when all she had to say was, “So? So does that mean I shouldn't get the good things of life?”

“Good things of life? Good things of life? Like my husband?” I asked and she returned with a grin and a nod.

Rina’s calm state got me very much irritated whilst I was raging unabated. I had no sooner raised my hand, about to give her a very resounding and brain-resetting slap, than Frederick walked in.

“Don't you dare!” He warned and flung my hand away. A flabbergasting glare draped over my face and I blabbed out the first thing that came to my head.

“Frederick, you must be mad! How dare you do this to me? I am your wife!” I affirmed my rights to him and it hurt so much to see the same man I exchanged vows with, make a mockery of me, laughing so hard.

When his laughter ceased, he yelled back at me, “Are you okay? Because you don’t act like you are.”

“Huh? What do you mean?” I asked Frederick, but Rina decided to be his mouthpiece, speaking before he could say anything and telling the truth to me.

“Aww Honey, It's all thanks to you and your strong desire towards your career that Frederick and I became so close that we fell in love with each other.” Her eyes lit up like a million stars while she kept on talking.

She nudged me to the wall and again, I felt like slapping her but Frederick immediately dragged me back and asked me to leave.

We both stared at each other until a voice asserted from behind.

“What's going on here? I could hear arguments from downstairs.” Ricardo Rick, my Father-in-law, walked into the room and noticed a suitcase by the side. He veered and shot an odd look at his son, who shifted Rina away from his father's gaze.

“What is she doing here and why is there a suitcase over there?” My Father-in-law saw how clingy his son was towards her, fiddling to hear him speak.

Frederick moved closer to his father and blocked Rina away from his angry gaze.

“I’ll tell you the truth, but can we talk in private?” He said as he looked at me.

My Father-in-law turned and I got the idea that they both wanted me to leave.

“Ugh! Don't look at me, I’m not going anywhere. It’s either you tell us the whole truth or you forget about it.” I fought back.

I had this feeling that there was more to Frederick's behavior than meets the eye and I wanted to be there when he told the truth, but his Father asked me to leave.

I frowned and left them alone to talk. Rina followed suit. Rina walked into the living room whilst I pretended to walk into the kitchen. I stopped by the window on the other side and eavesdropped on the conversation between Frederick and his father.

“So tell me, my ears are wide open. And please, be careful to not lie to your father.” Frederick’s father said to him.

Frederick took a deep breath and said, “Actually Dad, Rina isn't just Sophia's best friend, she's my mistress.”

A long and disappointing silence filled the room. His father was very much disappointed, and at the same time, dumbfounded by his son's shocking news. He sat on the bed and tried to comprehend the whole story.

“Father, are you okay?” Frederick asked.

“Son, you have no idea whatsoever about how your mum died. If not, you wouldn't be involved in such a messy situation.” He said.

Frederick briefly narrated the story his father always told him while growing up in a bid to prove that he knew what happened to his mother.

“Yes Dad, you told me that Mom died after giving birth to me.” He said back to him and his father giggled.

“I believe that now is the time for you to know the truth because your mom didn't die after giving birth to you and your brother. She died as a result of the mistake I made at the time."

Frederick quietly listened to him speak, as he continued, “I was like you. Tall, handsome with raging hormones as well."

He continued, “Your mom was the daughter of my father's best friend, and our alliances were arranged. We got married, not because we loved each other, but for the sake of our families.”

“We lived together, not as husband and wife but as friends. Your mom made sure to assist and support me in fulfilling every desire I had, and when I say desire; I mean

goals. She would always try to make time to help me, even with the smallest things. Indeed, Riya was a good friend to me.”

“As destiny would have it, our tagged friendship turned into love and our love turned into a beautiful story. Everything seemed to be going well for us until the devil had to interfere by bringing someone into our lives. She went by the name, Rosie Hill. She was your mom’s best friend at the time and when she walked into our lives, everything changed.”

“I had no idea what came over me. Rosie became my mistress, and somehow Riya heard about it. She got hurt and cried bitterly because my infidelity got exposed."

“The news spread like wildfire and circulated to our families and I had no idea that it gradually consumed your mom from within. My infidelity got her so depressed that she ran into an oncoming vehicle and died. I still cannot forgive myself for the sin I committed against her." He Inhaled and exhaled.

Frederick held a dramatic look at his father. He got so emotional that he ran outside and his father went after him. Frederick was so enraged that he angrily threw a vase to the floor.

“Son! Please listen to me.” He said to a hurtful Frederick who turned back and shouted, “Why do these to me, Father?”

Frederick’s father was so sad about how the whole situation turned out that he begged his son for forgiveness.

“Please, I’m sorry son; it was the only way to save you from getting hurt.” He said to him.

Frederick vented in return, “Save me from what? The fact that because of your sins, Mother died? It's your entire fault."

He yelled at his father and ran into the living room, meeting Rina and me, who had unsuspiciously made my way into the living room, on the couch, sitting far apart and watching how his father ran in after him.

“Son! Please listen to me.” He tried to touch him.

“What the hell do you wish to tell me?! Dad, I have heard it all.” Frederick's ill-mannered behavior broke his father.
