Chapter 54. Scared
Tears welled up in my eyes as I stared at the food Ms. Hazel had prepared earlier. Without ado, I took it and then started eating while crying. With every bite, I can't help but to question why my mother gave me away and never visited or tried to see me even once. Did she not want me? Did she really dislike me so much that after I was born and briefly held in her arms, she never came to see me again?
No matter how many times I lied about why I was in the orphanage, claiming that my mother had died, I couldn't hide the truth that she hadn't really died. She just left me at the orphanage. I didn't want to appear too pitiful, so I chose to lie.
After I finished eating, I cleaned up and headed downstairs. I whispered to the staff, "Have you seen Ms. Hazel?" I was feeling embarrassed and kept my head down. Everyone here was well aware of the ongoing disagreements between Ms. Hazel and me. Our arguments were too loud and frequent for them not to know.
