Chapter 9. What Are You Doing Here?

Jennifer’s POV

Though the day was exhausting, I was relieved that it ended quickly. I still had to be at work by five o’clock in the afternoon, but I looked forward to the weekend to spend some time alone and fix my bike.

After practicing for the Nationals, I went straight home and prepared myself a meal. Just as I was about to eat, my phone rang. I reached into my bag to check the caller ID.

It was Cassandra, my stepmother.

“Hey, Mama,” I greeted her while taking a bite of my meal.

“Hey, honey. Can you do me a favor real quick?” she asked.

“Yeah?”

“Kleo is at his friend’s house, and it’s already dark outside. I want you to pick him up. I’ll send you his address,” she explained.

I swallowed my noodles and replied, “Sure, I’ll finish eating first.”

“Thanks, honey,” she said before hanging up.
