Just a few hours at the party, easy. I just have to stay away from Eliana and all will be good. I put on my tie, stared at the mirror and decided I could do without it.

I needed personal space—alone, fresh air. So I drove myself to the event, no driver, zero security or whatever.

I was barely in the hall when an old acquaintance—female acquaintance, Felisha, rushed over to me. “Scott! It’s so good to see you again.” Without warning, she circled her arms around me, engaging me in an awkward embrace. “How have you been?” She asked, pressing herself so close to me.

The last thing I needed was female attention. “Come, let me introduce you to—”

“I’m not a fan of socialism.” I cut off, gently taking her hands off mine .
