Chapter 17. In the Heart of Danger

Emily's Pov

Benson and I stayed at the hospital for a few more hours until my father was moved to a private room. He looked pale, like a ghost.

"I'll prepare some things for the trip and be back shortly, okay?" Benson informs, and I nod. Benson approaches me and gives me a quick kiss on the top of my head. This gentle gesture soothes me for a few seconds before I see him leave through the door. I don't know how long I was alone in the hospital room with my father until my mother arrived.

My mother's face looks even more drawn; I control myself not to cry in front of her. Minnie approaches the bed where my father is lying and strokes the top of his head.

"Don't you dare leave, David Turner. You can't leave me alone," Minnie says tearfully to my father; her words are firm but filled with affection.

I pat my mother's back, trying to comfort her.
