I took a deep breath, my mind racing as I weighed my options. Should I tell him about Lila? What if he tried to hurt her? But the gnawing need to know the truth, to finally understand what was going on, drove me to push forward. I knew I wouldn’t get the answers I needed unless I confronted him directly. But I had to be careful—one wrong move could set him off, and I wasn’t sure I could handle what might happen next.
“Where were you yesterday?” I asked, my voice steadier than I felt inside.
