I leaned back in the chair, staring at every face in that room. I could already feel their anger boiling even before I opened my mouth.

“I know what this looks like,” I started slowly. “You’re wondering why I hired outside men, why I placed strangers at my gates and not you. The truth is simple. I didn’t do it because I don’t trust you. I did it because I’m stepping away.”
