Chapter 33. A Little Favor
Lucas’s POV
I pulled up in front of Derek’s gate. My heart racing as I stepped out of the stolen car.
Derek never once came to visit me while I was in prison and even after my transfer to the psychiatric hospital.
I guess he didn’t want the police to suspect he was part of us. But still, no one would have known.
I met an elderly man seated at the front of his gate, presumably the gate guard. But why would he assign such an old man to protect him? I wondered.
I cleared my throat, prompting the old man, who was dozing off, to jump up in fear. I held back my laugh because it was kind of cute.
“He straightened his head and then his shoulders. “How may I help you?” he asked, his voice forcefully deepened, as if he were trying to scare me off. How cute.
“Where is Derek?” I asked with a straight face.
“What do you need him for?” the man asked. Slowly, he got to his feet, his legs thin and wobbly.
