“Whispers.” I forced a small smile. “The walls have ears. It did not take long for me to find out. It is said that you also killed a girl my age. The only daughter of the Alpha and Luna of that pack.”

He blinked rapidly for a few seconds and then withdrew his arm from my shoulders before standing to his feet. “You should not be listening to rumors, Katara. If you want to find out anything, you come to me, okay?” He kept his eyes on me.

“And would you have told me if I had asked?” My question rendered him quiet for a few seconds longer than normal. “Exactly.” I stood to my feet, and when I tried to walk away, he stopped me.

“Wait!” He grabbed my arm gently. “Let me explain myself.”

“Explain yourself? You killed a girl my age! You sliced her throat open like butter!” My voice cracked.
