I pushed the humanity of compassion into the background of my mind. Human Briar was gone...for now.
Or maybe...I did not think about it as I walked briskly towards the nearest stream that would lead me to deeper waters. The siren in me knew exactly where to go, her memories of these waterways as clear as if she’d swum them yesterday.
The moment my feet touched the cool water, I felt the transformation beginning. I didn’t hesitate—I walked deeper until the current caught me, then dove beneath the surface. The change was immediate and overwhelming.
I closed my eyes as my legs fused together into a powerful tail that gleamed silver and deep blue in the murky water. Gills opened along my neck, allowing me to breathe the water as easily as air. My hair fanned out around me like liquid silver, and I could feel the power thrumming through every scale.
I swam faster than any creature had a right to move, cutting through the water like a knife
