“Mason,” I said, my voice low, trying to sound calm, “you don’t have to do this. Layla’s innocent in all of this. You’re better than this.”
“Stop talking!” Mason snapped. His eyes darted toward Layla, then back to me. “You think I want to do this? I don’t have a choice!”
“You always have a choice,” I argued, stepping closer.
“Stay where you are!” he shouted, his hand tightening around the gun.
I stopped. My eyes moved to Layla, her chest barely rising and falling. The fear in me turned to fury. “Fine,” I growled, pulling my phone to my ear. “You win, Mason. I’ll do it.”
