I stood in the living room, the sounds of Maddy and Layla’s voices fading as they disappeared upstairs.
The house was eerily quiet now, just the faint hum of the refrigerator and the soft creak of the old wooden floors.
It should have felt peaceful, but all I could hear was the pounding in my chest, my own frustration growing with every passing second.
