Jason’s POV
Layla let out a shaky breath and rubbed her hands over her face. "I should have noticed sooner," she murmured. "I should have seen that something was wrong before he got this bad."
I frowned. "Layla, this isn’t your fault."
She shook her head. "I was so focused on packing, on making sure I had everything ready for the trip. I wasn’t paying attention to him, Jason. What kind of mother doesn’t notice when her own son isn’t feeling well?"
I turned her toward me, holding her arms firmly. "Stop," I said, my voice firmer this time. "You are an amazing mother. You didn’t ignore him, Layla. Sometimes kids get sick suddenly. It’s not something you could have controlled."
Her lips pressed together, and for a moment, I thought she was going to argue. But instead, she just nodded weakly, letting her head fall against my chest.
I wrapped my arms around her, resting my chin on top of her head.
