Maddie's POV

I nodded, forcing myself to sound more enthusiastic than I felt. “Absolutely. Those dresses are stunning. You’ll look breathtaking in any one of them.”

Layla’s shoulders relaxed, and she let out a small laugh. 

“You’re right. Why didn’t I think of that? It’s not like he’s seen my closet or anything.”

I let out a relieved breath, glad she was dropping the idea of shopping. I didn’t think I could handle following her around a store, watching her try on dress after dress, knowing she was getting all dolled up for a man I couldn’t trust.

She grinned, her excitement returning. “Okay then! You’ll help me choose one, right?”

“Of course,” I replied, giving her a genuine smile this time. 

“We’ll make sure you look stunning.”

But even as I said the words, I felt a knot of anxiety twist in my gut. I was helping her look perfect for a man who might be lying to her.
