Isabella’s POV

He was too young to be Layla’s sibling.

And he was definitely too attached to Maddie to be some neighbor’s kid.

As I watched them play, something unsettled me.

It wasn’t their laughter.

It wasn’t the way they seemed so comfortable.

It was the nagging suspicion creeping up my spine.

I wasn’t just watching Maddie.

I was watching a child who…for some reason…felt important.

And I needed to find out why.

I couldn’t stop staring.

The little boy’s laughter echoed in the night, his tiny frame bouncing with excitement as he scooped up another handful of snow. 

Maddie dodged just in time, her voice filled with fake outrage.

It was a simple, innocent moment.

But something about it felt wrong.

No. Not wrong.

Familiar.

My fingers tightened around the car keys as my gaze locked onto the boy’s hair.

That shade of dark brown.
