Chapter 28
[Six months later]
“Erin?” Chris called, pushing the door open and putting his head inside. Erin blinked softly, wiped her eyes with the back of her palms, and pushed herself up from the bed. Chris’s eyebrows knitted in worry. He made his way into the room, stared at Erin for a while, and shook his head.
“You’ve been crying. I thought we…”
“I’m sorry,” she said, cutting him short. “I’m just a bit exhausted,” she lied. Chris wanted to push it further but decided to leave it be.
“I got some food for you, and please, do not say you are not hungry. If you don’t eat for yourself, eat for your child.”
His words pierced Erin, and she found herself nodding in agreement. He led her out of the room toward the dining area and helped her settle in. Erin had not expected steak, and until that moment, she had not realized how desperately she craved it. She relished the dish, helped Chris clean up, and went back to her room.
She spent the next two days repeating
