Chapter 291
Rose’s POV
General Ham’s expression softened, and he nodded. “They will, Rose. They will.”
For a moment, there was a comfortable silence between the both of us. I could see why so many people trusted General Ham—he had a way of making you feel at ease, of convincing you that everything was under control.
But something about those words he had said earlier still disturbed me, a tiny seed of doubt that I couldn’t quite ignore.
“General,” I said after a pause, my tone more serious, “if there’s anything going on, anything I should know about…you’d tell me, right?”
General Ham’s eyes met mine, and for a brief moment, I thought that I saw a doubt about something—lies, perhaps, or guilt.
But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his usual reassuring smile.
