Rose’s POV

As I walked back toward the village, the night felt colder, heavier.

My thoughts were racing, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled deep in my chest.

The words of the wolf echoed in my head, repeating over and over.

“It is your own task to look for the ruby and not to question me. Since you left the ruby you were supposed to search for and started searching for your friend, this is your punishment. You will stay here in this village and search for the ruby. Here, you will find the missing ruby.”

Punishment? The word stung, and I couldn’t help but feel confused and frustrated.

Was this really my punishment? All I had done was look for Miraelle, my friend.

I wasn’t looking for the Miraelle at that moment because I was worried about her. Was that so wrong? I kept wondering if what I did was wrong.

At least I needed to know her whereabouts before going after the ruby, I couldn’t just forsake Miraelle
