Beth’s POV

“Where are you from?” he asked, struggling to stand up from the chair. He finally managed to rise, and his gaze swept over me.

“Out with my friends,” I replied, frowning. He took a swig of his beer, only to realize it was empty. Frustrated, he threw the can across the room, making me flinch.

Lanzo had never been a heavy drinker. He was an okay guy when he met my mom after my dad left us. My mom was in love with him, or at least she used to be. I didn’t know much about their relationship, but after his company went under, he developed a gambling and drinking habit. When he was drunk, he would often make uncomfortable comments toward me.
