Ruby’s POV

A few hours later, the door opened and Hayes walked in. I jumped to my feet and ran into his arms. He winced as I bumped into him, but he held me tightly. I pulled away to inspect him. “Are you hurt?” I asked. He cupped my face and kissed me softly.

“I’m alright, love.” Despite his reassuring words, I still didn’t believe him. He had scratches all over his upper torso and gashes on his forehead, though they looked like they were healing. He looked at his brother with a frown and then back at me.

“He’ll be fine,” he told me, and I nodded. He pulled me in a sweet embrace again.

“Alpha Hayes,” Evelyn, whom I had almost forgotten, called from the doorway.

“Why are you here?” My mate’s voice was stern, and his eyes were icy.

“Well, Zylon got injured protecting me, so I wanted to stay until he wakes up to thank him properly,” she said, her tone demure. There was something different about how she acted and spoke around Hayes.
